The Australian Hydrographic Office (AHO) is seeking a Hydrographic Surveyor or Geospatial Analyst to work within a small office-based validation and assessment team.
Duties primarily involve the examination, manipulation and validation of hydrographic data and the allocation of quality attributes required for nautical chart compilation. There is an emphasis on building strong relationships with survey authorities to ensure quality hydrographic data is available for nautical charting.
This position would suit a hydrographic surveyor with field experience seeking the stability of working in an office environment. Knowledge of hydrographic surveying practices, including modern multibeam sonar and swathe systems, survey processing practices and associated quality assurance measures would be advantageous. Experience undertaking hydrographic surveys for navigation safety would be desirable.

Our Ideal Candidate:
Our ideal candidate will have qualifications in hydrographic surveying, being a Certified Practising Hydrographic Surveyor Level 2 or equivalent, or Hydrographic Data manipulation in GIS. They have experience analysing bathymetric data using hydrographic survey or GIS applications to determine data quality in relation to national and international standards.
They have high attention to detail and readily adapt to enterprise data management systems. They have an understanding in horizontal and vertical datums in relationship to surveying and charting. They demonstrate high level communications skills to build and sustain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure provision of the highest quality validated bathymetry in support of national charting requirements.
The team is part of the National Hydrography Program Directorate with in the Australian Hydrographic Office. The office is approx. 150 personnel both Navy and APS working together to enable safe navigation in Australian waters, support Australia’s blue economy, contribute to protecting the marine environment and providing support to defence.
The Validation and Assessment team consists of 8 personnel being Navy and APS. The team is a mixture of qualifications in the fields of Hydrographic Surveying and in Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
The teams’ main functions are to prepare hydrographic data in readiness for internal and external stakeholders. This involves the assessment, analysis, manipulation, review and publication of bathymetric survey data in Caris Bathy Database. Other team members then deconflict the validated bathymetry to produce a single surface that best represents the seafloor. This is provided to cartographic personnel for the compilation of paper and electronic navigational charts.
