About this position

BMT Oceanica is currently seeking an Experienced Remote Sensing Analyst, to work within the Environmental Data Management Team.  The successful applicant will be employed on a fixed term maternity leave contract preferably commencing in early to mid January 2015.  The role will provide support in a range of marine and coastal projects, applying skills in the interpretation and integration of remote sensing imagery with spatial data, as well as in the management of marine remote sensing projects.  BMT Oceanica is interested in hearing from applicants with three or more years’ experience in these relevant fields.  The successful applicant will demonstrate relevant academic and/or professional experience, excellent communication skills, initiative, and a proactive approach.

The successful applicant will have experience in the interpretation and integration of remote sensing imagery with spatial data and field measurements for environmental purposes.  The role will require the execution and management of marine remote sensing projects to successful completion and supporting the creation and documentation of innovative yet commercially focused remote sensing solutions.

Strong GIS skills and prior project management experience are also considered essential for this role.

As a large component of this role will focus on the use and ongoing development of BMT Oceanica’s marine habitat mapping protocols from satellite, aerial and hydroacoustic data, prior experience in this area is desirable.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Technical

The experienced Remote Sensing Analyst will be expected to provide technical services to clients including, but not limited to:

  • the application of marine remote sensing techniques in the interpretation and integration of remote sensing imagery with spatial data and field measurements for environmental purposes, in particular habitat mapping
  • providing expert remote sensing advice
  • providing GIS support, data analysis and cartographic presentation
  • assisting in populating (including commissioning capture where required) and maintenance of BMT Oceanica’s spatial library
  • supporting the creation of innovative yet commercially focused marine remote sensing solutions
  • assisting with project management and budget preparation
  • liaison with clients and data providers
  • preparing for and attending meetings.

Administrative

The experienced Remote Sensing Analyst will be expected to assist in the successful operation of BMT Oceanica’s business via a number of activities including, but not limited to:

  • attending and contributing to office/staff meetings
  • undertaking project-related administrative tasks as required
  • participating in, and contributing to, activities relating to staff development, strategic planning and business improvement.

Business development

The experienced Remote Sensing Analyst will be expected to assist BMT Oceanica’s business development initiative via, but not limited to:

  • support in preparing proposals
  • contact potential clients and data providers
  • maintain an awareness of emerging marine remote sensing techniques and software solutions
  • network and attend industry-related events.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Essential

  • A tertiary qualification in Remote Sensing
  • Three or more years work experience in Remote Sensing and GIS
  • Strong critical thinking and communication skills; and
  • Enthusiasm and initiative.
  • Permanent Australian residency (or Special Category Visa, allowing the holder to remain and work in Australia for the duration of the contract)

Desirable

  • Demonstrated knowledge of related disciplines such as:Marine science
    • Habitat mapping
    • Geospatial analysis
    • Hydroacoustics
    • Photogrammetry
    • Hydrography
