Full-Time Assistant Director Maritime Data Operations

The Role

As the leader of the Maritime Data Operations Section this position is responsible for managing the consolidation and movement of all hydrographic data received by the Maritime Geospatial Branch of the Australian Geospatial-Intelligence Organisation (AGO).

The position manages and coordinates this work for a small team of APS staff and contractors. There is a strong emphasis on continual process improvement and data curation that is responsive to stakeholder requirements while encouraging and providing opportunities for continued professional development and training within the data management team.

This role will be the subject matter expert on the operation and support of Mediaflux and will also be responsible for providing complex data management advice and support to colleagues on best practice methodologies for maintaining data integrity throughout its lifecycle.

The role will be required to build and sustain effective relationships with national stakeholders and may be called on to represent the Branch within AGO and other forums.

About our Team

The Maritime Data Management Directorate provides strategic, operational and governance expertise. The Maritime Data Operations Section is responsible for ensuring that data is managed in support of the National Hydrographic and Charting programs .

These functions deliver and sustain business processes associated with receipt, storage, archiving and dissemination of maritime source data. This includes working closely with IT staff contractors to maintain the organisations data management system, Mediaflux.

The team work closely with geospatial analysts, nautical cartographers and hydrographic surveyors by making data discoverable and accessible in support of quality assurance and assessment of navigational safety.

The data management team maintain a range of technical competencies in support of data curation and analysis. The successful candidate will align and link data management operations with strategic goals and be able to lead people at all levels through an evolutionary program of work that extracts the most value from maritime data.

You will be instrumental in leading the organisation towards a data driven structure and decision making framework which focus on data quality and trust across all levels of the organisation. To achieve this you will possess strong communication skills, demonstrated through stakeholder engagement and an ability to work collaboratively.

As an innovator with strong analytical skills and an ability to both develop innovative solutions and lead their implementation you will have strong negotiation skills and experience with managing business process and technology changes within an organisation.

You will have experience with managing large volumes of information. In addition, an understanding of extracting value from complex hydrographic and/or scientific datasets through the development of effective cataloguing schemes and data management systems would be desirable.
