Job Description
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is seeking to recruit Geospatial Specialists, Senior Geospatial Specialists and Assistant Directors (APS5, APS6 and EL1 classification levels) in our Location Infrastructure Branch (LIB)to help us respond to the growing demand for more granular, place-based socio-economic data to support data-driven responses to some of Australia’s most pressing challenges, including climate change, entrenched disadvantage and population growth. Our objective is to create a merit pool of suitable candidates to support current and expected vacancies across LIB.
The successful applicants may work out of either of our offices located in Belconnen (Canberra), Adelaide, Brisbane, Hobart and Docklands (Melbourne). Flexible working arrangements (including a hybrid model of working from home and the office) apply.
About the area and roles
Help us deliver national geospatially-enabled statistics that puts location intelligence in the hands of decision makers.
The Location Infrastructure Branch consists of over 60 people working across Canberra, Adelaide, Brisbane, Hobart and Melbourne.
We deliver relevant and trusted geospatially-enabled statistics, insights, and expertise that helps unlock location intelligence. We are responsible for foundational data infrastructure that enables the integration of geospatial and statistical data, including the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) and the Address Register. We support a smarter, location- enabled Census of Population and Housing through operational intelligence and insights. We work as a trusted partner across government and with research institutions to gain place-based insights into our society, economy, and environment on priority government initiatives including:
- Digital Atlas of Australia – an interactive, secure and easy-to-use online platform that brings together, curates and connects trusted national datasets from across government.
- Australian Climate Service – to provide improved data, intelligence and expert advice on climate risks and impacts to support and inform decision-making.
- Life Course Data Initiative – a part of the Australian Government’s commitment to target entrenched disadvantage through data driven insights about the characteristics and drivers of disadvantage across communities.

Staff in the Location Infrastructure Branch are responsible for projects, products and infrastructure that use a broad range of skills, including data integration and analysis, data engineering, data science, data governance, cartography, and data visualisation. Common technology solutions include the ArcGIS Online, ArcPro and ArcGIS Enterprise suite of products, Feature Manipulation Engine (FME), Python, as well as cloud and on-premises infrastructure to manage the end-to-end lifecycle of geospatial assets. We work with both government and commercially sourced data to produce high-quality geospatial products and engage and collaborate across the statistical and geospatial communities, nationally and internationally, to influence emerging geospatial issues and future innovations.
Geospatial Specialists may be Data Analysts, Data Scientists, Data Engineers, Data Managers and other data professionals who specialise in working with geospatial information.

We are looking for people who are keen to widen their skill set, but have most or all of the following:
Geospatial Specialist (APS5)
- Experience in applying geospatial and related technologies to produce geospatial data products and analysis, or to maintain geospatial data and infrastructure.
- Knowledge or ability to quickly understand and apply data governance frameworks and policies that ensure that data is appropriately treated with respect to governance, privacy, security, access, discoverability, retention, archive and disposal.
- Demonstrated ability to take personal responsibility for work tasks and work collaboratively within a team.
- Ability to apply conceptual and analytical skills to data and information, including the ability to critically assess information and contribute to innovative solutions.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
Senior Geospatial Specialist (APS6)
- Experience in applying geospatial and related technologies to produce geospatial data products and analysis, or to maintain geospatial data and infrastructure.
- Knowledge or ability to quickly understand and apply data governance frameworks and policies that ensure that data is appropriately treated with respect to governance, privacy, security, access, discoverability, retention, archive and disposal.
- Leadership of, or experience working in and contributing to, high performance teams.
- Strong conceptual and analytical skills, including the ability to critically assess complex information and contribute to innovative, sustainable solutions.
- Project management and procurement experience including providing strategic advice and shaping the delivery of requirements.
- High level written and verbal communication skills. Stakeholder engagement including managing complex and sensitive relationships.
Assistant Director (EL1)
- Demonstrated experience in leading technical teams to apply geospatial and related technologies to produce timely and quality outcomes for clients and/or to maintain data infrastructure (e.g warehouses, pipelines and processing systems).
- Knowledge or ability to quickly understand and apply data governance frameworks and policies that ensure that data is appropriately treated with respect to governance, privacy, security, access, discoverability, retention, archive and disposal.
- Demonstrated ability to support and facilitate development of team capabilities, and lead teams through change.
- Project management and procurement experience including providing strategic advice and shaping the delivery of requirements within a dynamic and complex environment.
- Strong conceptual and analytical skills, including the ability to assess complex information and broader contextual factors to develop innovative solutions.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills including the ability to communicate complex concepts and manage complex and sensitive relationships.
The following is desirable for all roles:
- Formal qualifications or equivalent work experience in a field involving applied geospatial data and analysis such as data science, computer science, geospatial science, geomatics, geography, GIS, statistics, mathematics, environmental science or related fields.
- Training and experience in data management principles, processes, and systems.
