Introduction
Defence requires exceptional candidates to fill several Executive Level 1 (EL 1) positions in the Australian Geospatial Intelligence Organisation (AGO). AGO works across diverse intelligence issues and matters of national significance, enabling military operations, delivering Defence capability and contributing to the achievement of national security outcomes. It also contains the Australian Hydrographic Office which has a national role to support safe navigation of all vessels in Australian Waters.
A merit pool of highly suitable candidates will be established to fill EL 1 vacancies that occur in AGO within the next 18 months. Roles
AUSTRALIAN GEOSPATIAL-INTELLIGENCE ORGANISATION:
The GEOINT Capability Delivery (GCD) Branch within the Australian Geospatial-Intelligence Organisation (AGO) delivers, sustains and governs capability as part of the Joint Geospatial Program. These capabilities integrate GEOINT from a wide variety of sources, including military and civilian geospatial information and imagery, to enable access to timely, accurate and actionable GEOINT as a critical enabler for many Defence activities.
The branch has a focus on GEOINT capability needs to support the Defence GEOINT Community in meeting the challenges that will emerge in Australia’s national security environment as well as to take advantage of the unprecedented acceleration of technological change. The strategy to solve these hard problems is a focus on multi-disciplinary, collaborative, and creative approaches that cross traditional organisational boundaries. This is being supported by building and continually developing the workforce across the APS and the ADF, and further developing strong international and industry partnerships.
GEOINT Capability Delivery (GCD) Branch is seeking to fill roles such as:
The Australian Geospatial-Intelligence Organisation (AGO) is seeking highly motivated professionals for Information Communication Technology (ICT) Project Management roles to lead the delivery and sustainment of capability that will enable the AGO mission.
You will be accountable to plan, lead and manage delivery and sustainment activities, ensuring that capabilities delivered are fit for purpose, and effectively sustained. You will be responsible for actively managing key stakeholder relationships.
You will be required to comply with relevant legislative frameworks (such as the Commonwealth Procurement Rules), government decision-making and Defence’s mission and policy requirements. You will exercise a considerable degree of independence and be expected to demonstrate both sound decision making and judgement in performing your role.
As a member of GEOINT Capability Delivery (GCD) branch, you will be working collaboratively with APS, Military and contractor personnel to deliver and sustain GEOINT ICT capability that not only meets the needs of today but also addresses the challenges that will emerge in Australia’s national security environment. We are seeking candidates with demonstrated ICT project management experience – those who:
- Have a strong knowledge of the different project management methodologies;
- Have led or worked in complex ICT areas and ICT projects;
- Can work effectively in the areas of governance;
Demonstrated experience with ICT project management, ICT capability delivery, ICT Transition to Operations, ICT sustainment, or the One Defence Capability System will be considered favourably.
Specific skills or experience with GEOINT or Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are desirable but not mandatory. If you have ICT-related experience, you can add value to GCD while we can provide you with the opportunity to learn about GEOINT.

You will be accountable for activities in support of GEOINT Capability Delivery (GCD) branch’s work, such as procurement, contract management, financial management, project/sustainment governance and interfacing with the One Defence Capability System. As part of this, you will be responsible for actively managing key stakeholder relationships.
You will be required to comply with relevant legislative frameworks (such as the Commonwealth Procurement Rules), government decision-making and Defence’s mission and policy requirements. You will exercise a considerable degree of independence and be expected to demonstrate both sound decision making and judgement in performing your role.
As a member of GCD branch, you will be working collaboratively with APS, Military and contractor personnel to support delivery and sustainment of GEOINT ICT capability that not only meets the needs of today but also addresses the challenges that will emerge in Australia’s national security environment. We are seeking candidates with demonstrated experience – those who:
- Have led complex procurement, contract and financial management activities;
- Have experience supporting complex ICT project and sustainment governance activities;
Demonstrated experience with Government ICT procurement, contract and financial management, and the associated project/sustainment governance (such as the One Defence Capability System) will be considered favourably.
The Maritime Geospatial Branch within the Australian Geospatial-Intelligence Organisation (AGO) delivers maritime GEOINT for Military operations and also manages the Australian Hydrographic Office which functions under the Navigation Act 2012 to provide accurate and timely navigation products, services and hydrographic data to mariners using Australian Waters. The AHO undertakes, under Memorandum of Understanding the Charting role for Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands.
Maritime Geospatial (MG) Branch is seeking to fill roles such as:
Maritime Geospatial Manager roles lead technical teams to deliver maritime geospatial data, products and services to enable safe navigation in Australia’s waters in support of the AGO mission.
You will be accountable for activities in support of MG branch’s work, such as data and records management, production, quality assurance, contract management, financial and risk management and project governance. As part of this, you will be responsible for actively managing key stakeholder relationships domestically and internationally.
You will be required to comply with relevant legislative frameworks, government decision-making and Defence’s mission and policy requirements. You will exercise a considerable degree of independence and be expected to demonstrate both sound decision making and judgement in performing your role.
As a member of MG branch, you will be working collaboratively with APS, Military and contractor personnel to deliver data, products and services today but also focus on our digital future. We are seeking candidates with demonstrated experience – those who:
- Have experience in maritime geospatial projects;
- Have experience stakeholder engagement within and external to Defence
